President’s MessageHope everyone had a Happy and Healthy Holiday season! The Christmas decorations this year were outstanding and thank you to all those who participated!! What a difference a year makes in terms of the weather- last year at this time we were all digging out from the second snow storm of the season and the arrival of this new year saw temperatures in the Mid 50’s!! Not so good for the skiers but certainly helps with the fuel bills. Elections were held at the December meeting for the 2012 year. The following are the results of that meeting:
Our January meeting will be held on January 26th at 7:30 pm and will see a presentation put forth by the DOT/RBA design group in regards to the West 11th, 12th and 13th Road Street reconstruction project. The design group has produced the construction plans for the project and will be presenting the details of such to the community with a Q & A to follow. It is strongly recommended that all residents from 11th, 12th, and 13th roads try to attend as this will be an opportunity to have input into the plans that are now being finalized. Construction is still on schedule to start in summer 2012. The next phase of Marsh Restoration efforts is underway and visible off of the west side of our island. Cranes, Barges and Tug boats have been laying the pipe that will carry the sediment over to the northern portion of Yellow Bar Marsh. This is the largest and one of the oldest (carbon dated to over 1100 years old) marsh islands in the bay and one which is severely degraded , specifically the northern portion, due in large part to the massive nitrogen loading from the city’s waste treatment plants. Now that those plants are going to be upgraded to the tune of over one hundred million in state of the art technology to reduce that nitrogen loading by 50%, it is expected that the restored marsh islands will survive and thrive, as those already completed at Elders east and Elders west are. Considering that these saltwater marsh lands are considered among the most ecologically productive on the planet, and that they are the key to this bays health, this is very good news for our bay! GLIMPSE OF THE PAST
Old Broad Channel 70+ Years Ago – Is there anyone who remembers my aunt and uncle Pete and Mary Foeller and their Deli & Grocery Store? It was a 2 story house on the east side of the boardwalk, before the boulevard. It was the third house from the sluiceway (south side). They lived upstairs, 2 bedrooms and bath, living room; first floor was the store and large kitchen where they cooked for the deli and also took their own meals. My uncle had a boat and went to Rockaway for his supplies, sometimes to Hammels and other times to the dock at Hollands, in all kinds of weather. I remember him telling me the boat had a “make and brake” engine – whatever that was. The folks would put their purchases on a list and pay for them at the end of each month; it was called “put it on the tab.” When the road came in, the business went down. The folks were going to the new Bohacks and the A&P. After one year, they were forced to close shop and sold the building to a family called Miller from Brooklyn who converted it to a one family home. Mary and Pete also owned 2 summer houses that they rented to the same family for many seasons. Across from the store was the Thomas Family Restaurant & Bar right on the bay – what a view. They served a great Sunday dinner. The Thomas family lived in a large house next door and had 6 or 7 children. They sold to the Mauro family and was then called Channel Inn. Charles P. Weis, my dad, had a house moving and dock building business. He moved and raised many houses in Broad Channel and all over the Rockaways. He had a yard and office in Arverne and an office at our home at 17 East 6th Rd. He moved St Virgilius Church to its present location from around the corner.
